Onewheel Riders Wanted for Oceanside Independence Parade Sat. June 24th

Oceanside Independence Parade Saturday, June 24, 2023:

Harm Reduction Circle is excited to announce that we will be participating in the Oceanside Independence Parade on Saturday, June 24th, 2023, through our Meals on Onewheels Orange County initiative. Our aim is to raise awareness of our harm reduction program & services within the community. A local tradition since 1892, the Oceanside Independence Parade is returning to Downtown Oceanside. Spectators can expect to see floats, bands, walking groups, vintage cars, our Meals on Onewheels riders, & more go by on Coast Highway from Wisconsin Avenue north to Civic Center Drive just past City Hall. This year's theme is once again "Hometown Heroes."


 

ONEWHEEL RIDERS WANTED:

Join Meals on Onewheels OC (MOOW) & ride with us in the Oceanside Independence Parade on June 24th, 2023! We are seeking 10 to 30 Onewheel riders to dress in red, white, & blue matching this year's parade theme, "Hometown Heroes." Show your patriotic spirit & support Southern California communities while riding your OW! We want YOU to join us! 🎉🇺🇸


As a group, Meals on Onewheels OC provides nutritious meals & on-the-go harm reduction measures to the homeless population through street-based outreach events each month. This year, we are excited to participate in the annual Oceanside Independence Parade for the first time. Join us & help us expand our team of riders from Orange County & surrounding counties. Together, we can establish new partnerships with businesses, restaurants, or organizations, & raise awareness of the MOOW movement & other life-saving harm reduction initiatives and services available within the communities we serve. ☺️🤙


If you plan to participate in the parade, you must RSVP by June 10th. Additionally, you must provide your own Onewheel, have the confidence to ride safely in the parade, & if minors are joining, they must be accompanied by someone 18+. VOLUNTEER INFORMATION:

Arrival Info:

We will provide detailed information regarding arrival & meeting up on the day of the parade closer to the event date.


What to Bring:

Please bring your fully charged Onewheel, charger, most patriotic outfit, quirky gear, & most importantly, your BADA$$self!


Perks for Riders:

As a volunteer, you will receive free lunch from HRC between 1:30-2:00 pm (optional).


Day-Of Staging Instructions: The parade route begins at PCH & Wisconsin to PCH & Civic Center Drive.


What is Meals on Onewheels OC: Our initiative focuses on increasing community involvement by recruiting riders & volunteers for distribution efforts & local businesses for support to provide nutritious meals to the homeless population of Orange County, California. We also aim to incorporate on-the-go harm reduction measures.


Parade Schedule:

  • 8:00-8:30 am: Check-In

  • 9:00 am: Set-Up & Line-Up

  • 9:45 am: MOOW Group Photo

  • 10:00 am: Parade Begins

  • 12:00 pm: Parade Ends

  • 12:00-1:00 pm: Narcan Distribution (optional)

  • 1:00-2:00 pm: MOOW Group Lunch (optional)

  • 2:00-5:00 pm: MOOW Group Ride (optional)


What to Expect:

We will recruit between 10 to 30 riders dressed in red, white, & blue outfits with designs & verbiage that promote community-driven harm reduction & overdose prevention. Our goal is to promote community engagement, inclusivity, & social responsibility while also keeping with this year's parade theme, "Hometown Heroes," by wearing patriotic costumes. Some of our riders may also be in costume, carry banners, signs, or other quirky items to draw attention to our cause.

From Parade Organizers:

Code of Conduct:

  1. Per the City of Oceanside and the San Diego County Sheriff Department, no throwing, distributing, tossing, or handing out items to the crowd along the parade route (including candy, pamphlets, flyers, and brochures) OR any activity that would entice spectators onto the parade route from the curbside. Failure to comply will result in the IMMEDIATE disqualification of your entry.

  2. Absolutely no alcoholic beverages will be permitted.

  3. No political campaigning.

  4. Animal groups must pick up after their animals.

  5. In the interest of safety and traffic control, no entry shall double back along the parade route while the parade is in progress or before officials have re-opened the route to traffic.

  6. Respect the residents along the staging streets by placing all rubbish in provided containers and staying in the street at all times.

  7. Participants should act with respect towards others and treat public and private property with respect.

  8. Participants should follow the Parade rules and regulations, decorate their entry to represent this year’s theme (Hometown Heroes), wear patriotic costumes, and keep their group together in an organized fashion.

  9. Each group must assign a monitor to maintain contact with their entry, and one representative from each group must check-in at Ditmar School between 8:00 am and 8:30 am on the morning of the parade.

  10. No entry shall double back along the parade route while the parade is in progress or before officials have re-opened the route to traffic.

  11. The committee may limit the number of participants and reserves the right to accept or reject any entry for any reason up until the parade line-up is finalized on June 4, 2023.

  12. Failure to abide by the Code of Conduct will result in disciplinary action, including removal from the parade and/or restriction from future participation.
